MAN WITH A MISSION: Aamir as the street smart guy in Ghulam.
We couldn8217;t shoot in a crowded colony in the city with a popular actor like Aamir Khan. That would have created a riot. So, we have tried to recreate the stretch between Charni Road and Novelty Cinema,quot; says director Vikram Bhatt. Which is why the sprawling, vacant land near the second gate of Film City has been transformed into a huge residential middle-class colony for Ghulam which also stars Akshay Anand and Rani Mukherjee. It is 8.30 pm and the entire set is plunged in darkness, except for a small area where a few unit hands are busy with the light arrangements. Cameraman Dharma Teja is in the thick of it, trying to artificially create the right ambience. The set, which cost over Rs one crore, is massive and very close to the original, down to the last messy congested pavement. Run-down hotels, a lodge, chaiwallas, a post-office and jewellery showrooms are all there. The only thing that8217;s missing is the sweaty sea of people.
Ghulam revolves around Aamir Khan, a street-smart youngster called Siddhu. The residents of his area live in constant fear of the local goondas, the head honcho being Raunak played by Sharat Saxena. No one is willing to take him on. quot;Initially, Siddhu has the same attitude. But he soon realises that their collective weakness is Raunak8217;s strength and finally raises his voice against Raunak,quot; says Vikram.He claims that this is not just another revenge saga where a lone man can take on the might of hundreds. quot;While in typical masala films the hero is projected as a superman, my hero is a symbol of the righteous rage of a single person, who lashes out against the anti-social elements,quot; says the director.Meanwhile, Teja is finally ready for the shot and Vikram takes his position next to the camera. Soon Aamir and Akshay emerge from their make-up vans. Aamir is dressed in a pair of black jeans and a black T-shirt. He is also sporting a steel chain around his waist in the typical tapori ishtyle
. And Akshay is wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket.
They rehearse before the shot. Vikram and Aamir are trying to help Akshay get a grip on his character. In this shot Akshay is supposed to be in a rage. He wants to fight Raunak while Aamir tries to stop him.
It8217;s a trolley shot and Teja is perched on a crane with the camera. After a few rehearsals, everyone takes their positions. As the scene requires rain and lightening, Vikram asks for artificial showers and then shouts, quot;Actionquot;.
Aamir starts with, quot;Yaar Hari! Appoon ko tere mafik baat karne 8230;.quot; quot;Cut,quot; yells Vikram. quot;Look slightly shook-up,quot; he tells Akshay. Take two is again interrupted by calls for a retake. This time it is Teja who is unhappy with the shot. quot;Trolly bahoot jaldi chal gaya,quot; he tells the director. For the third take Aamir begins with, quot;Yaar Siddhu! Appoon ko 8230;.quot; The director screams, quot;Arey yaar, Siddhu nahin Hari bolna hai. Siddhu to tumahra hi naam hai.quot; Aamir bursts out laughing when he realises his mistake, and it8217;s time for take four. Take four 8212; quot;Yaar Hari! Appoon ko tere mafik baat karne ko nahin aata, per tere ko ek baat bolta hai, ye jo kar raha hai na tu, ye bahoot danger hai.quot;
Akshay reacts, quot;Kuch bhi ho, mere liye to bus yehi ek rasta hai.quot; Aamir warns him, quot;Yeh rasta nahin hai entry hai, tere ko kya lagta hai Raunak tere ko gaal me pappi8230; pappi8230;quot; Aamir fumbles with the word and the shot is called off once again. quot;You should be little more aggressive,quot; Vikram tells Aamir. Take five meets with the same fate and before Vikram can announce the next take, an attendant tells him that the magazine reel will have to be changed.
Vikram finally clears the shot in the sixth take, but the fastidious Aamir is unhappy with his performance, and feels that he can improve on it. He requests Vikram for one more take. Finally, the shot is okayed in the eleventh take.
Talking about his role in Ghulam, Aamir says, quot;I play a careless tapori. Although I8217;ve played a street-smart guy in Rangeela as well, this character is completely different.quot; To drive the point home, he adds, quot;Here my character changes. Initially I am a carefree guy, but later circumstances force me to adopt an aggressive stance and fight against injustice.quot;
And if playing a tapori again brings him the kind of success Rangeela did, Aamir can be sure he8217;s on a safe wicket.
