Mumbai, January 15: Leander Paes, ranked 137, qualified for the main draw of the Australian Open, beating Marcus Ondruska of South Africa 7-6 4, 7-6 5 in two hours four minutes in the third round qualifiers on Saturday. Paes had accounted for Ville Liukko of Finland and Frantisek Cermak of Czech Republic in the first and second rounds respectively.

According to information available here, it was not known whom Paes would run into in the first round of the main draw when matches begin on Monday.

Meanwhile, Nirupama Vadiyanathan conceded her third round qualifying match to Kerry-Anne Guse of Australia ranked 135 due to injury. Nirupama won the first set 6-3, but lost the second 0-6. The third set was level 1-1 when Nirupama pulled out.

Nirupama had accounted for the higher-ranked Kimberly Po 6-7 5 6-3 6-3 in the second qualifying round. Paes started by breaking Ondruska, whom he had beaten to win the Wimbledon boys final in 1990, in the first game. But Ondruska quickly broke back in the fourth game, and went a break up in the eighth game to serve for the first set at 5-3. Paes saved five set points, and dropped three break points before puling back the ninth game.

The second set went with serves, and Paes won the big points to stay on course. He had eight aces and six double faults in the match.

Meanwhile, the draws for the doubles event has not yet been released. Paes, pairing Sebastien Lareau of Canada, is likely to be the top seed there.
