Datta Khebudkar passes away
Kolhapur: Playwright, director Datta Govind Khebudkar died of kidney trouble at his residence here on Friday. He was 73 and is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters.

Khebudkar, who was in government service and retired as a deputy collector, wrote and directed as many as 12 dramas. He also acted in various Marathi films including Devghat produced by his younger brother well-known lyricist Jagdish Khebudkar.

Belliappa takes over at INS Shivaji
Pune: Commodore CM Belliappa took over the command of INS Shivaji at Lonavla from Commodore HS Malhi at an impressive ceremonial parade on Saturday.

Addressing the parade, Commodore Belliappa exhorted the officers and sailors to continue their hard work.Commodore Belliappa was Deputy General Manager at Naval Dockyard, Vishakapatnam and has served as Senior Engineer and Engineer officer on various frontline ships like INS Ranjit, INS Rana and INA Amini in his earlier appointments. Commodore HS Malhi leaves for Delhi for the National Defence College, Wellington.

Kalam to attend varsity convocation
Pune: Scientific advisor to the Ministry of Defence Bharat Ratna Dr A P J Abdul Kalam will be the chief guest at the 92nd convocation ceremony of the University of Pune to be held on January 5 at the varsity premises.

Chancellor and Governor Dr P C Alexander will preside over the function. The convocation gains significance as the varsity is celebrating its golden jubilee year.

Award for Shaikh
Panchgani: Principal of Dawn Academy here, Liyakat Shaikh was honoured by New Delhi-based Parents Teachers Association of India for his contributions to the field of education. The award was conferred upon Shaikh by former Vice-chancellor of Delhi University, Yash Pal at a recent function held in New Delhi.

Founder secretary of Hamida Education Society8217;s Dawn Academy, Shaikh played the lead role in establishing an educational institution at the young age of 24 in 1983. Under his stewardship, the academy, a residential-cum-day school, grew to be a recognised institute during the past one and half decades. Trust chairman Irshad Shaikh and other trustees congratulated Shaikh for his achievement.

Bus roko
Kolhapur: Congress I workers on Sunday staged a bus roko agitation at the city8217;s Central Bus stand here for about an hour and a half to register their protest against the recently imposed hike in ST bus fare. The agitation was led by former member of Parliament and senior Congress leader U N Gaikwad, Kolhapur City Congress I Committee president R K Powar, Pramila Jarag and others.
