A case of attempt to murder has been registered in Manali against a Punjab Police constable, guarding Rajasthan MLA and Congress leader Natwar Singh’s son Jagat Singh, after he opened fire at a New Year’s party.

The complainant is hotelier and former Kullu Zila Parishad vice-chairman Sunder Singh Thakur.

Jagat Singh, who represents the Lachhmangarh Assembly seat in Rajasthan, is the nephew of Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh. The man who opened fire is Punjab Police constable Gurjit Singh.and policemen, followed the MLA, the latter flew into a rage and his guard opened fire.

‘‘Had we not run away when Gurjit opened fire, I would have been killed or seriously injured,’’ Thakur told The Indian Express. Gurjit was beaten up and had to be admitted to the local Lady Willingdon Hospital.

When contacted, Manali DSP Khushal Sharma said that an empty cartridge had been recovered from the spot while the case was being investigated by the SHO. Constable Gurjit told The Indian Express that he had to open fire in self-defence. He claimed some persons were teasing women at the party which was objected to by Jagat Singh. The MLA, despite repeated attempts, could not be contacted for his comments.

It’s learnt that Thakur had gone to Johnson Cafe on the invitation of Piya Johnson, proprietor of the Cafe, for a New Year party.

Thakur alleged that Jagat Singh and his guards had a scuffle with him and his friends at the party. He claimed that after he called the police, the MLA and his guards left the place.

Thakur said that when he, accompanied by friendsand policemen, followed the MLA, the latter flew into a rage and his guard opened fire.
