
New list on Feb 19
MUMBAI: The National cricket selectors will meet in Calcutta on February 19, the fourth day of the first match of the tri-nation Asian Test Championship between India and Pakistan, to choose the team for the second match of the series and prune down the World Cup probables’ list to 19. The second Asian Test championship tie, between India and Sri Lanka, is scheduled from February 24-28 at Colombo and the World Cup in England is slated to be held from May 14-June 20. The final list of 15 team members and four probables would be decided next month and sent to the organisers before the March 31 deadline, according to the executive secretary of the Indian cricket board, Sharad Diwadkar.
Mundy shines
CALCUTTA: Uttam Singh Mundy jumped back into reckoning with a round of five-under 67 on the second day of the Rs 5 lakh Cyanamid Open golf championship at the RCGC club.
Defending champion Basad Ali maintained his lead at the half-way stage of the tournament as he playedanother consistent round of 71 to tally four-under 140 after two days.
Cable damage
IMPHAL: Unidentified miscreants have pulled out some 800 telephone cables near the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, damaging telecommunication links between the Complex and other stadia where the fifth National Games are to be held.
A telecommunication department official said the damage, done on Tuesday night, could be rectified before the opening ceremony on Sunday. The Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) has lodged a complaint with the police.
Aces Tour
CHENNAI: The Gold Flake Aces Tour will be conducted from February 22 to March 13 with three tournaments in Madurai (Feb 22-27), Chennai (March 1-6) and Coimbatore (March 8-13) conducted by the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association under the auspices of the All-India Lawn Tennis Association. There will be only two events, men’s singles and men’s doubles. The composition of the main draw for the singles will be 20 direct entries, four wild cards and eightqualifiers. For the doubles, which has a main draw of 16, the composition is 10 direct entries, two wild cards and four qualifiers.
The tournaments, which have AITA ranking status, will offer total prize money of Rs 6 lakh with Rs 2 lakh for each leg. The singles winner in each leg will receive Rs 26,000 and the doubles winners Rs 12,600. The winner in each tournament will get 30 AITA points while the doubles winners will earn 15 points.
