NAGPUR, DEC 12: The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed by voice vote an amendment to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Act 1998, thereby de-affiliating pharmacy institutions from the varsity from restrospective dates.

Public Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar, who tabled the amendment, announced that all the pharmacy colleges and other institutions will now be re-affiliated with the respective universties, they were affiliated to prior to this.

He said the government was accepting the demands of pharmacy students in the state who felt that the pharmacy course was more technically oriented and not health oriented. Students insisted that like any medical graduate, they cannot start practice immediately.

Pharmacy was included in technical education and was governed by the All India Council of Technical Education AICTE, Khanvilkar informed the Assembly.
