Farmers8217; organisations are up in arms against Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar8217;s proposal to import 2 million tonne wheat in the current year.

Pawar said today that the government was considering the import to build up buffer stocks in the country in the wake of downward revisions of Rabi wheat estimates to 73.06 million tonnes from 75 million tonnes and fears of untimely rain damage to the crop.

8216;8216;We are already importing half a million tonne of wheat. We will further import 1.5 million tonnes,8217;8217; Pawar said, adding that the tender for the supply would be floated soon.

Farmers8217; outfits allied to both the Congress and the Left have questioned the proposal in view of the bumper wheat crop in the current season. Instead of importing wheat at high prices, the government could have increased the MSP for farmers.

They pointed out that though the Rabi estimates had been revised downward, it was still a 1.5 per cent increase over last year.
