Chennai, for long, has been the epicentre of motor racing in India, and it is even more so now with an international-standard track available at Irungattukottai where the events were shifted to from Sholavaram.
In 1990, the brand-new track, boasting of a 3.7 kms circuit, was inaugurated, giving way to heightened expectations of staging international events, with the backing of McDowell company which has been extending support to the sport for more than a decade.
The McDowell Grand Prix on Sunday, February 8, is the latest of the series in which Formula Campus cars, apart from 125cc and 250cc bikes, will be seen in action, and also an event for country8217;s leading CEOs who have a passion for motor sport.
The track is 11 metres wide and has 10 major curves, apart from a number of minor ones. A smaller club circuit of 2.1 kms is also available for shorter events. It also has three straights, with the longest one being 250 metres.
The circuit conforms to FIA Federation Internationale de Automobile, theWorld governing body for the sport, and FIM Federation Internationale du Motocyliste norms for racing circuit, and is licensed for race upto and including Formula III for cars as well as all classes of two-wheelers. The design and layout of the circuit makes it very challenging for drivers while putting a premium on skill rather than sheer power. The track has been the venue for several international races, including Formula Asia, Porches, Formula-3, Asia Pacific motorcycle championships, Super Bikes, etc.
