UP seeks CBI probe into Lakhimpur rape
LUCKNOW: The UP government on Tuesday requested the CBI to take over the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl at the Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur-Kheri district on June 10. The girls family had been demanding a CBI probe and CM Mayawati had also earlier declared that the government had no objection,but the government took more than three months to take a decision. Fourteen-year-old Sonam was found hanging from a tree on the premises of Nighasan police station. Her parents alleged that policemen had raped and killed her,but police said she had committed suicide.
Mallika Sherawats brother booked
MUMBAI: Actress Mallika Sherawats brother Vikram Lamba has been booked after he accidentally fired a bullet while cleaning his licenced firearm,injuring a 25-year-old man in Versova,police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred on Sunday at Lambas office in Bhaktani tower. Vikram has been booked under section 336 of IPC endangering life or personal safety of others and 337 causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others, said Additional Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil.
Student killed by girlfriends mother
FARIDKOT: In a case of suspected honour killing,an engineering student,who was missing since last month,was allegedly killed by the mother of a girl with whom he had an affair,police said on Tuesday. Amandeep Kaur,who was arrested on Monday,during interrogation confessed to pushing Gurtej Singh into a canal. Gurtej,a student of Adesh Engineering College,had been missing since August 26.
13 arrested in CTU recruitment scam
CHANDIGARH: 13 people were arrested on Tuesday from different parts of Haryana in connection with the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking CTU recruitment scam. The arrests were made in connection with the scam in recruitment of 144 conductors last year8230;About 85 per cent of the appointments were done on the basis of impersonation, Chandigarh Police Chief Naunihal Singh said. Two middlemen were arrested who arranged the impersonators by charging between Rs 15,000 and Rs three lakh each,he said.
Infiltration bid at Indo-Pak border
JAMMU: The BSF and the Pakistani Rangers exchanged small arms fire along the international border in Ramgarh sector after the former foiled an infiltration bid on Tuesday. BSF8217;s Deputy Inspector General J S Oberoi said that at 2.05 am,alert BSF jawans at Nursery Post noticed five militants coming towards Basantar river on the Indian side. BSF jawans opened fire making them to retreat,and rangers opened fire towards the Indian side. The exchange of fire continued for nearly 20 minutes. However,there was no loss of life or property on the Indian side.
Woman,son electrocuted
BARGARH: A mother-son duo was electrocuted and a girl child seriously injured after a live service wire fell on them after getting snapped from a pole in Kulunda village in Bargarh district on Tuesday,police said. The woman and her son were charred to death while her daughter was fighting for her life in the hospital,Inspector Arjun Kumar Sahu said.
