CHANDIGARH, Nov 13: Deputy Election Commissioner Onkar Singh, who is on a visit to the City, held a meeting with senior UT officials today to chalk out the modalities for holding panchayat elections to the 18 UT villages.

The term of the panchayat had expired early this year, but it had got an extension of one year. Now, however, no further extension could be allowed as per the election norms.

Besides Onkar Singh, those present in the meeting included Finance Secretary G. Vajralingam, Joint Finance Secretary Pirthi Chand and Block Development Officer-cum-SDM centre P.S. Gill.

Although no exact date for holding the panchayat elections was finalised, the officials present in the meeting said that the elections are likely to be held by January. quot; The decision is expected soon after the arrival of UT Adviser, who is on a foreign tour, quot; a senior UT official said.
