VADODARA, March 8: With the detection of three positive cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis AFP from various parts of the city, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC has found the need to intensify Pulse Polio Immunisation PPI and will carry out an additional drive on March 14.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner general I B Peerzada told Express Newsline that muscles of children are affected due to the AFP. According to in-charge Chief Health Officer CHO Dr Dhurandhar Pathak, polio is one of the reasons which leads to AFP among children.

The cases have been reported from Navapura Hathikhana, Panigate and New Indiranagar settlement in Gorwa. Peerzada said the additional dose of PPI would be administered among all the children up to the age of five in these particular areas to ensure that polio is totally eliminated from the city by the turn of the Century.

As many as 52,000 children will be administered the pulse polio vaccine through 200 booths which are to be set up by the VMC. It may be recalled that in the PPI programmes conducted during the last couple of years, the VMC was being able to administer vaccine to the target decided before carrying out the drive.
