Goa Congress: Cut up about being divested of his responsibilities, Digambar Kamat said he was the only MLA from the previous Assembly who was left in the Congress before the 2022 polls. “If I had to go (to BJP) I could have gone before the election,” he said.
On Sunday, five of the total 11 Congress MLAs in Goa went incommunicado, fuelling speculations about a split in the party.
MLAs Michael Lobo and Digambar Kamat were accused of conspiring with the BJP to engineer the defection of eight of its 11 MLAs in the state Legislative Assembly.
On Sunday, out of the total 11 Congress MLAs in the state, five -- Michael Lobo, Digambar Kamat, Kedar Naik, Rajesh Faldesai and Delialah Lobo -- went incommunicado, a senior party leader earlier said.
The party will also announce the name of its new leader of opposition before the commencement of the Assembly session, according to Goa Congress chief Amit Patkar.
Towards the end of a day marked by intense speculation and meetings with the MLAs, AICC Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao announced that Lobo had been removed from the position of the leader of the Congress legislature party and that action for anti-party activities would follow against him, Kamat and three other MLAs.
Alleging that both Lobo and Kamat had been working with the BJP in the background, Rao said: "I remember Mr Kamat leading the oath in temple, church and dargah. Clear reflection of how much they believe in Goa."
Extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in Sanguem and Cancona in South Goa, the IMD said. While Sanguem received 233.4 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, Cancona received 213.8 mm.
The two persons arrested on Saturday were identified by the police as Sonia Dohan from Haryana and Shrey Kotiyal from Uttarakhand. Gawas said they were booked under the IPC sections for offences of cheating and impersonation. The duo had checked into the hotel on Friday.

After camping in Guwahati for days, the Shinde faction, which brought down the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra, arrived on a special Spice Jet flight at Dabolim airport in South Goa.
The Shinde faction, which is set to break away from Shiv Sena and stake claim to form the government in Maharashtra with the BJP, is expected to arrive in Goa late evening after a long stay in Guwahati.
