Pawars suffer major setback: The civic poll verdict came as a major blow to both factions of the NCP. Contesting together for the first time since the 2023 split, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP and Sharad Pawar-led NCP(SP) failed to check the BJP’s surge in their traditional strongholds. While the NCP(SP) failed to open its account in 24 civic bodies, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP was routed in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, raising questions over the future relevance and strategy of the Pawar-led parties amid the BJP’s expanding urban footprint.

Just as the Shirkes gave information to the Mughals and Sambhaji Maharaj was captured at Sangameshwar, the Thackeray brothers were working to divide Hindus. They were reading out a script dictated by their 'abba' sitting in Pakistan," Rane said, speaking to reporters. — PTI

Maharashtra Corporation Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates | 1 party, half the power: BJP now holds nearly 50% of Maharashtra’s corporator seats

The latest round of municipal corporation elections has underlined the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) near-total dominance of urban Maharashtra. With 1,425 corporators elected on its own, the BJP now accounts for almost half of the 2,869 corporators across the state’s municipal corporations, marking its strongest civic performance yet.

The scale of the BJP’s rise becomes clearer when viewed over time. In the previous municipal election cycle, the party had 1,099 corporators, while in the cycle before that, its tally stood at just 320. The BJP had single handedly held power in previous five year terms from 2017 to 2022 after which the Administrator had control of the civic body due to delay in civic polls after it was put on hold by supreme court on reservation issue. Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026 LIVE | ‘Is it getting erased?’: Fadnavis asks as he scratches his finger after voting, dismisses Raj Thackeray’s marker pen claims

The Opposition parties in Maharashtra are expressing concerns about foul play even before polling has concluded in the corporation polls, reflecting a defeatist mindset, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Thursday.

Responding to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray’s claim that marker pens are being used instead of indelible ink to enable fraudulent voting, Fadnavis said the Opposition appears to be trying to establish a narrative to justify their potential loss ahead of the results.

After exercising his vote in his hometown Nagpur, Fadnavis, scratching his finger marked during voting, said, “I have also been marked with a marker, is it getting erased?… If there are issues related to machines or marker pen, the Election Commission should look into it and use something else; they can use oil paint if they want. The elections should be impartial. But creating a ruckus on everything and raising questions is very wrong.”

Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026 LIVE | Story of indelible ink & why it is at centre of civic polls row

The purple mark on a voter’s finger is a familiar sight during elections in India. Known as indelible ink, it is meant to show that a person has already voted. During the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra held on Thursday, this routine step has turned into a subject of controversy with Opposition parties alleging that what should be indelible is easily coming off, alluding that this allows for scope of electoral malpractice.

What is indelible ink?

Indelible ink is applied to a voter’s finger after voting. Its only purpose is to ensure that no one votes more than once. The mark is supposed to stay on the finger for several days and should not come off easily.

When did India start using it?

India began using indelible ink in 1962, during its third general election. To ensure that people do not vote more than once, the Election Commission of India decided to mark voters’ fingers with ink. The method worked and has remained in use ever since. Read Full Report

Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026 LIVE: First-time voters remained enthusiastic, some confused about casting votes four times

Among the many voters that flocked to polling centres to elect corporators after a delay of four years were a substantial number of first-time voters who turned to cast their votes on Thursday.

Enthusiasm was palpable in Sewri where many young voters turned out to exercise their franchise. Around 1 pm at a polling centre in Sewri, a group of four neighbours–all first-time voters in the local body polls–arrived to cast their votes amid excitement. Among them, Mayuri Mane (22), a first-time voter who works in IT sector said, “We have decided to cast our votes on the basis of the promises laid out by the candidates.”

Meanwhile, several first-time voters also experienced confusion particularly in municipal corporations like Navi Mumbai where voters had to cast votes on four separate machines owing to the four-member ward system.

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday claimed irregularities in the Maharashtra civic polls, terming it an attempt to murder democracy, and urged voters to dislodge the "brutal, fraud, corrupt and dictatorial regime of the BJP".

Uddhav and his cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, targeted the State Election Commission (SEC) over a range of issues, besides claiming that the ink used on voters' fingers could easily be erased.

Addressing a news conference while voting was underway, Uddhav demanded the suspension of State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, and alleged collusion between the poll body and the government. (PTI)
