Air in Delhi may turn ‘Severe’, GRAP 3 curbs imposed

The minimum temperature, meanwhile, slightly rose to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Friday, still three notches below normal. Delhi had recorded a night temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday – the coldest day of the season so far.

DelhiPolice and forest officials seal illegal access routes to curb mining in Aravalli hills of Haryana’s Nuh district.

With Delhi’s air quality worsening and forecasts indicating a slide into the ‘Severe’ category, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas on Friday invoked anti-pollution curbs under Stage III of Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) with immediate effect.

The minimum temperature, meanwhile, slightly rose to 4.3 degrees Celsius on Friday, still three notches below normal. Delhi had recorded a night temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday – the coldest day of the season so far. The maximum was recorded at 22.5 degrees Celsius.

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 354 on Friday, up from Thursday’s 343, in the ‘Very Poor’ category. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology forecast further deterioration in AQI due to unfavourable weather conditions as well as low and variable wind speeds.

Air quality levels in neighbouring cities also worsened. Gurgaon recorded an AQI of 347 (Very Poor) on Friday, up from 318 a day earlier, while Noida’s AQI rose to 363 (Very Poor) from 344.

Under GRAP III, schools are to switch to hybrid mode of teaching – offering both online and offline modes – while BS-III petrol and diesel private vehicles will face restrictions. Also, BS-IV diesel-operated LCVs registered outside Delhi will not be permitted to enter the Capital, except those carrying essential commodities or providing essential services.

However, BS-III and diesel commercial vehicles below that model – registered outside Delhi – are completely barred from entering the city, even if they are transporting essential goods, as per directions effective from November 1, 2025.
The IMD has, meanwhile, issued a yellow alert for moderate fog conditions in many places on Saturday.
