The occasion was especially meaningful as it marked the couple’s first Sankranti together after their marriage last year
A family from Tenali in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district has gone viral for celebrating Sankranti in a way that perfectly captured the spirit of the festival. This year, the harvest celebration turned into a grand gesture of love and hospitality as the family prepared an extraordinary spread of 158 dishes for their son-in-law, drawing admiration from across the state.
As reported by NDTV, Vandanapu Muralikrishna and his wife organised the elaborate feast for their son-in-law Sridatta, who hails from Rajahmundry in the Godavari district, and their daughter Maunika. The occasion was especially meaningful as it marked the couple’s first Sankranti together after their marriage last year.
In Andhra Pradesh, Sankranti is not just about harvest or rituals; but a celebration rooted in family ties, gratitude, and welcoming loved ones. For newly married couples, the first Sankranti is often treated with special care, particularly when the son-in-law is hosted with warmth and ceremonial generosity. Staying true to this tradition, the Tenali family went well beyond the customs.
The spread included festive favourites like murukulu, chekkalu, and garelu, along with a wide range of jaggery-based sweets such as ariselu, bobbatlu, sunnundulu, and kajjikayalu. The menu was further expanded with multiple vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, from flavourful rice items to richly spiced curries and side dishes.
A video of the celebration soon began circulating online, sparking conversations about tradition, love, and excess.

Social media users shared mixed reactions. While some marvelled at the effort, one joked that “he must have kept himself hungry for 2 days to be able to eat all this.”
Another user commented, “People say love can’t be measured, Andhra parents just proved it can be, in dishes. Sankranti celebrations turning into a Guinness record attempt, one laddu at a time.”
A third person wrote, “Only in India—where love, tradition, and hospitality are celebrated on a truly grand scale during Sankranti.”
A fourth individual added, “Wastage of money and food….respect the culture but could’ve done differently.”
