Soon, real-time information related to the charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) in Delhi — such as the location, capacity, and availability — will be a click away. The Delhi government is working on an “open EV database” that will bring all such details onto a single platform to ensure convenience for vehicle users.

This dashboard is expected to be developed under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, which is currently in the drafting stage, according to a senior official of the Transport department.

“Currently, a portal called Switch Delhi and the One Delhi app have details of charging stations and charging points installed across the city, but the department observed that the data is not accurate,” the official said. “We also receive complaints that the data is confusing… For instance, a location may show up on the portal for a facility for battery swapping, but on the ground, it is not available,” the official added.

To address this situation and to help EV users with accurate real-time data, the department is planning to strengthen the system with a dashboard. “The department plans to develop a dashboard where one can get all related information before going to that particular location and standing in a long queue. It will have locations of the charging stations with maps, number of charging points, capacity, waiting time, and details like whether battery swapping facilities are available,” the official said.

At present, officials said, the department has not set up any charging stations in the city. “But it is in the process of setting up an open EV database to maintain real-time information on charging stations and battery swapping stations,” said the official.

According to a government document, the city has a requirement of 36,150 charging stations. The Capital, meanwhile, in all has 5,883 charging stations, 8,912 charging points, and 893 battery swapping
stations.

These include those set up by DTC, NDMC, and others. While 620 charging points and 60 battery swapping stations have been installed at various locations by the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL), which is responsible for setting up EV charging infrastructure in the Capital under the Power department, 625 charging stations having 1,607 charging points have been installed under the government’s Single Window Scheme operated by discoms.

The government plans to install around 7,000 new charging stations by the end of this year to promote clean mobility and boost EV adoption, according to officials.

Officials added that the new EV policy is likely to propose various new provisions to promote the installation of EV charging infrastructure. Under the upcoming policy, the government also has plans to increase the incentive per swapping station from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, officials said.

The existing EV policy will expire at the end of March, and a revised policy is expected to be finalised and notified by then. “The EV 2.0 final draft will be finalised in this fiscal itself, so that it can be implemented soon after the existing one expires,” said an official.

Under the new policy, Delhi’s 5.8 million two-wheelers are being primarily targeted through subsidies and scrappage incentives. The number of public charging and battery-swapping points are set to be increased from the existing 9,000 to 36,000. Interest subvention for commercial trucks and three-wheelers, along with benefits under the Centre’s PM E-Drive scheme, are also on the cards to facilitate a transition to cleaner fuels.
