Priyanka Chopra, 43, loves a good ice dunk facial, and one of her latest Instagram stories is proof. If you also love a good ice facial, we have got you covered with all the information you need on when to opt for one. Dr Shweta Nakhawa, Consultant-Dermatology, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, explained that the practice, often referred to as an ice facial or cold immersion facial, involves exposing facial skin to very cold temperatures for a short duration.
Explaining that cold exposure temporarily constricts the blood vessels in the face, the expert said: “This vasoconstriction can help reduce facial puffiness and give the skin a tighter, refreshed appearance. Once the skin warms up again, blood flow returns, which may give a natural glow.”
What are the benefits of an ice facial?
The immediate benefits include reduced puffiness, especially around the eyes, temporary pore tightening, and a refreshed look. It can also be soothing for mild facial swelling and may help calm the skin after heat exposure, said Dr Nakhawa.
How often should this ice routine be done?
This routine should be done occasionally rather than daily, as overuse can stress the skin barrier. According to Dr Nakhawa, once or twice a week is generally sufficient for those who want to try it for “short-term benefits like de-puffing or refreshment.”

Does this routine work for everyone?
No, it does not suit all skin types. Dr Nakhawa said that people with sensitive skin, rosacea, broken capillaries, or conditions like eczema may find that extreme cold worsens redness or irritation. “What works for one person may not be suitable for another,” said Dr Nakhawa.
Are there any risks involved?
Yes. Prolonged or frequent exposure to ice can cause skin irritation, dryness, or damage to sensitive blood vessels. Holding the face in ice water for too long can also lead to numbness or discomfort. It is important not to overdo it.
What should people keep in mind before trying this routine?
The ice facial should be brief, gentle, and done with clean water. It should never cause pain or prolonged redness. “Anyone with underlying skin conditions should consult a dermatologist before trying such trends. Most importantly, this is a temporary cosmetic practice and not a substitute for proper skincare or medical treatment,” said Dr Nakhawa.
