Mumbai BMC Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: MNS chief Raj Thackeray congratulates elected corporators; says 'will stand by Marathis'

A day after BMC election results were announced MNS leader Raj Thackeray Saturday congratulated to all the elected corporators of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena.

Taking to X, Thackeray wrote, "First and foremost, heartfelt congratulations to all the elected corporators of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena. This election was not an easy one. It was a battle of tremendous money power and the power of authority against Shivshakti. Yet even in such a fight, the workers of both parties gave an excellent battle. Their praise can never be enough."

He went on to say that although MNS did not win, it doesn't mean the party will lose heart and give up.

"It is saddening that MNS did not achieve the expected success this time, but that does not mean we are the kind to lose heart and give up. The corporators who have been elected will more than hold their own against the ruling powers right there on the ground. And if anything is seen to be happening against the Marathi people, they will surely bring those in power to their knees."

He reiterated his party's support for Marathi people saying, " Our fight is for the Marathi people, for the Marathi language, for Marathi identity, and for a prosperous Maharashtra. This fight itself is our very existence. All of you are well aware that such struggles are long-term in nature."

He said the party will reflect on what went wrong and will take action.

"Whatever went wrong, whatever was left undone, wherever we fell short, and what needs to be done — we will all together analyse it and take action. Actually, there is no need to even tell you this, but still I will say it: whether in the MMR region or across the entire state, the ruling powers and those who have gone under their shelter will not leave a single opportunity to harass and exploit the Marathi people. Therefore, we must stand firmly behind our Marathi people. Elections will come and go, but we must never forget that our very breath is Marathi. See you soon. Let us get back to work once again. Let us rebuild our party and organisation afresh!!!"

According to the Author, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has delivered a long-cherished goal of the BJP in Maharashtra — to take control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Though the party has ousted Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) from power in the BMC, it couldn’t achieve the dream of a majority on its own. Unlike the municipal corporations of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Nashik and Nagpur, voters in Mumbai have given a restrained mandate to the BJP. It needs to work in coordination with the Shinde Sena to secure coveted positions in the BMC body. So, Eknath Shinde has once again proved that the BJP can’t reduce his party to the margins..... Mumbai BMC Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: BJP’s dominance in BMC polls

The BJP, along with the Shiv Sena, is set to stamp its dominance at the grassroots level as it leads in 22 of the 29 municipal corporations where polling was held on Thursday.

Apart from Mumbai, where the BJP and the Sena, led by Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, have crossed the halfway mark in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Devendra Fadnavis-led party also looks set to retain the Pune Municipal Corporation and has ensured massive leads in Nagpur, Solapur, and Akola.

The trends in the BMC polls also mean that the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) won’t be at the helm of the civic body for the first time in 25 years.

Mumbai BMC Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: Shina-led Shiv Sena far behind rival Sena (UBT)

Despite contesting 90 of the 227 seats in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the BMC elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena lagged far behind the rival Sena (UBT) in Mumbai, even though it has the party name and symbol.

As per early trends till 2 pm on Friday for 210 of the 227 wards, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde was leading on only 26 seats, while the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, was ahead on around 60 seats.

The result is seen as a clear setback for the Shinde faction in Mumbai, which has traditionally been the stronghold of the undivided Shiv Sena.

Although the combined tally of the BJP and the Shinde-led Sena has crossed the the halfway mark needed to form the BMC government, the poor showing of the Shinde Sena on its own has raised questions about its support base in the city.

Mumbai BMC Election Results 2026 LIVE Updates: Exit polls project clear BJP majority; Thackerays and Congress likely to struggle

The BMC elections were held on January 15, 2026, after 8 years. The elections to the richest civic body had been kept on hold due to various reasons. The BMC polls were held along with the elections to 28 other civic bodies in Maharashtra.

The turnout was around 50%. As per the state election commission, the voter turnout in Maharashtra's civic polls was 41.13% till 3.30 PM.

The election was not with its share of controversies. While in the run up to the elections, the ruling Mahayuti said the Shiv Sena and MNS had allied to "survive" and dupe the Marathi manoos, on the polling day the Opposition alleged that marker pens were used to 'ink' voters instead of indelible ink. Maharashtra SEC Dinesh Waghmare, however, said there were attempts to spread rumours and the claims are under investigation.

At total of 1,700 candidates were in the fray in the 227 wards of the BMC. As many as 1.03 crore voters in the BMC area were eligible to vote. Exit polls after the voting projected the BJP taking a lead in over 130 seats. The Shiv Sena-MNS alliance is projected to get under 70 seats.

The counting of votes will begin at 10 AM today.
