BMC Election Results 2026: BJP emerges as single largest party in BMC tally, Shiv Sena bags 29

On Mahayuti’s victory in the BMC and other civic polls in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said, “I thank all the voters of Mumbai and Maharashtra for placing their trust in the Mahayuti. The results for the 227 wards in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are being declared by the State Election Commission on Friday, January 16.

Despite contesting 90 of the 227 seats in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the BMC elections, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena lagged far behind the rival Sena (UBT) in Mumbai, even though it has the party name and symbol.

As per early trends till 2 pm on Friday for 210 of the 227 wards, the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde was leading on only 26 seats, while the Shiv Sena (UBT), led by Uddhav Thackeray, was ahead on around 60 seats. 

The result is seen as a clear setback for the Shinde faction in Mumbai, which has traditionally been the stronghold of the undivided Shiv Sena.

Although the combined tally of the BJP and the Shinde-led Sena has crossed the the halfway mark needed to form the BMC government, the poor showing of the Shinde Sena on its own has raised questions about its support base in the city. 

From 90ft road in Dharavi, ward 184, Congress candidate Sajida Babbu Khan has won. Sajida is the wife of Babbu Khan, former corporator of the area. She defeated the Shiv Sena's Komal Jain and UBT's Varsha Nakashe.

In 145 ward, which encompasses Trombay, Cheetah camp areas, AIMIM's Khairnusa Akbar Hussain has won, recording approximately 7653 votes.

"The victory is of the people, not mine alone... We will work on all the issues that we had raised," she said.

While the long-awaited BMC election saw Mumbaikars come out in vigour to exercise their franchise, a ward in the upscale Colaba area recorded a dismal turnout of 20.88 per cent, keeping up its tradition of muted participation in past polls.

According to final polling data, civic ward 227, which covers parts of Colaba, logged 20.88 per cent turnout, the lowest among Mumbai's 227 civic wards.

The civic ward was unable to manage even half of Mumbai's overall voter turnout of 52.94 per cent, which means only 9,614 residents of the total 46,036 exercised their franchise. - PTI

In Ward number 60, which encompasses Lokhandwala areas of K/West, Sayali Kulkarni of BJP has been declared winner.

In ward number 200, which encompasses F South's Wadala area, Urmila Panchal of UBT Sena has won against BJP's Sandeep Pansode.

In ward number 172, Rajashree Shirwadkar of BJP has won, defeating Madhuri Prashant Bhise of UBT.

Rajeshree is the sitting corporator from this ward, which encompasses Sion Koliwada.

In ward number 135, Navnath Ban of BJP has been declared winner, confirm officials.

In ward number 207, which is Byculla area, Rohidas Lokhande of BJP has been declared winner defeating Shalaka Dilip Haryan of MNS.

In ward number 194 of Mumbai, Nishikant Shinde of Shiv Sena (UBT) has been declared a winner. He defeated Samadhan Sarvankar of Shiv Sena (Shinde).

In ward number 124, Sakina Shaikh of Shiv Sena (UBT) won with a total of approx 12496 votes. She has defeated the sitting candidate of Jyoti Khan of Shiv Sena (Shinde).

In ward number 182, which encompasses Mahim, Milind Vaidya of Shiv Sena (UBT) has been declared winner. He is the sitting corporator from the ward.

In ward number 51, which encompasses Goregaon, Varsha Tembwalkar of Shiv Sena Shinde has been declared winner, confirm BMC officials.

Congress's Asha Kale wins Dharavi Ward 183. Kale won by a margin of 1,450 votes. She received a total of 5406 votes. The second highest votes were procured by Vaishali Shevale of Shiv Sena (Shinde).

Another Congress candidate Ashraf Azmi has been declared winner from Ward 165.

Meanwhile, independent candidate, Rekha Ram Yadav emerges winner from Ward 1.

Amid counting of votes, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said, “Thousands of voters’ names were missing from areas where Shiv Sena(UBT), MNS, and Congress get support. EVMs malfunctioned in several wards, and complaints were ignored. Meetings between civic officials and BJP leaders during the Model Code of Conduct are deeply troubling for democracy.”

Seconding MNS chief Raj Thackeray's claims that election commission is using markers instead of indeible ink, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Friday took a dig at EC, saying, "Vote Chori is an anti-national act."

In a post on X, Gandhi said, "Election commission gaslighting citizens is how trust has collapsed in our democracy. Vote Chori is an anti-national act."

The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) civic elections has begun, with results set to be announced today, January 16.

A total of 1,700 candidates are contesting for 227 seats in the country’s richest civic body, which has an annual budget of more than Rs 74,400 crore.

A voter turnout of 52.94 per cent was recorded in the Mumbai civic polls, down from 55.53 per cent in the last elections in 2017, officials said on Friday.

According to data released by the civic body, ward number 114 in suburban Bhandup recorded the highest turnout at 64.53 per cent, while ward number 227 in south Mumbai's Colaba area reported the lowest turnout at 20.88 per cent.

Of the over 1.03 crore eligible voters in the metropolis, 52.94 per cent exercised their franchise on Thursday between 7.30 am and 5.30 pm, they said. More than 15 hours after the polling, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared the final voter turnout.

Officials said counting of votes will start at 10 am at 25 designated counting centres across Mumbai.

The turnout on Thursday showed a steady rise, with 6.98 per cent voting till 9.30 am, 17.73 per cent till 11.30 am, 29.96 per cent till 1.30 pm and 41.08 per cent till 3.30 pm, officials said.

In the morning, short queues were seen at most polling stations. However, many booths witnessed noticeable lines by midday, with longer waiting times, while moderate crowds were reported in the afternoon and evening. Several prominent figures cast their ballots during the day - PTI

On the BMC results, Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey said, “Today is January 16, a day we have all been eagerly waiting for. We have worked sincerely for Mumbai’s development, for the youth, and for the safety of women. We believe our efforts will bear fruit. We have done our duty; now we await the people’s blessings. We hope to form the government, have a Marathi Mayor, and receive a thumbs up from Mumbai’s citizens by the afternoon.”

Ahead of the Maharashtra civic poll results, Chandrakant Vaidya, uncle of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, said

, “Both the brothers have come together, and they will succeed for sure. I pray to God that they get to rule the BMC, and that will be in the interest of the people of Mumbai. There is no doubt that there will be a Marathi Mayor.”

Ahead of BMC results today, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC said, “We are confident that the Mahayuti will lead the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. From the beginning, our focus has been on a development-driven agenda - housing, metro projects, transport, environment, healthcare, education and sewage treatment plants. The hard work of CM Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CM Eknath Shinde on the ground is now reflecting in the trends. The people’s mandate is always supreme, and we respect it.”
