A foreign woman living in India has struck a chord online after sharing a thoughtful list of five everyday things she feels India does better than France.

In a viral Instagram post titled “Things India does better than France”, a content creator who goes by the name Freldaway spoke about the small but meaningful aspects of Indian life that have impressed her since she moved here for work. Describing herself as “a French girl who’s moved to India for work”, she reflected on experiences that, according to her, make daily life in India uniquely special.

She began with street food, calling attention to its sheer variety and accessibility. Unlike in many places, she noted, good food in India is never far away and doesn’t have to be expensive. “So many tasty, varied and affordable options, readily available everywhere you go!” she wrote, adding that the experience often comes with friendly conversations with vendors and even a glance at local newspapers.

Indian jewellery was another standout for her. She openly admired its unapologetically bold and colourful aesthetic, saying she fully embraces the “indian jewellery maximalism”. “Let’s stack jhumkas, bangles, rings and necklaces like there is no tomorrow,” she wrote, admitting she’s completely “OBSESSED” with the style.

She also spoke about long-distance travel in India, especially at night. Comparing it to France’s FlixBus system, she said the latter simply doesn’t match up to India’s sleeper AC buses and trains. While she enjoys bus travel back home, she described it as “definitely not as comfy” and praised India’s connectivity for making overnight journeys comfortable and scenic. In fact, she suggested skipping flights when possible and opting to travel by road or rail from “a comfortable lil’ bed”.

Hair care was another area where she felt India had a clear edge. From traditional oiling practices to naturally thick hair and protective hairstyles, she joked that “everyone and their mother could be on a shampoo commercial.” In contrast, she poked fun at her own “thin ass French hair,” saying it stood no chance.

She wrapped up her post on an emotional note by talking about Indian hospitality. Recalling moments of being welcomed into people’s homes, sharing meals and cultures, and receiving food as gifts, she wrote, “I will never not be impressed by the kindness and hospitality everyone has shown me in India.” She added that she always felt “extremely welcomed” and wished France could be “as kind and open-hearted towards foreigners”.
