Email warns of attacks on BSE,JN Stadium,flights
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Police have been alerted about a possible terror threat to the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE,the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in Delhi,which is currently hosting the Commonwealth Games,and flights from Mumbai to Delhi. Sources said the information was passed on to the police on Thursday by V A Dange,head of security at BSE. Dange is believed to have received an e-mail from an unidentified person who claimed that he had overheard two people discussing the possibility of attacking these targets on Friday.
Life term till death for Pratibha murderer
Bangalore: A Bangalore fast-track court on Friday sentenced a cab driver involved in the kidnap,rape and murder of a young BPO employee in December 2005 to a rare punishment of a life term till death for the murder and 10 years each for kidnap and rape. Pratibha Murthy,26,of the BPO HP Globalsoft,was kidnapped by the cab driver,Shivakumar,on the night of December 13,2005 on the pretext of being the driver designated to transport her to work. She was found raped and killed at an isolated location outside Bangalore on the basis of information provided by the cab driver during his police detention.
PDS scam: Apang gets bail for 8 weeks
Guwahati: Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Gegong Apang,the prime accused in the multi-crore PDS scam,was Friday granted bail for eight weeks by the Gauhati High Court. Apang,who was arrested on August 24,was given bail on the condition that he will be available for interrogation all the time,will not leave Itanagar without the courts permission and will not induce,intimidate or get in touch with any of the witnesses or the accused in the case.
High Court quashes DGP8217;s appointment
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Friday quashed the Tamil Nadu government8217;s decision to appoint Letika Saran as Director General of Police,observing that the appointment was not done as per guidelines earlier issued by the Supreme Court. Saran,the first woman head of the state police,will continue in the post till the end of November by which the government has been asked to draw up a list of officers eligible to replace her.
Cohen moots US-Pak nuclear deal
MUMBAI: Pakistan can be pushed to conduct itself as a responsible nation if the United States rewards Islamabad with a civilian nuclear agreement on the lines of the one Washington signed with New Delhi,renowned US foreign policy expert Stephen Cohen said on Friday. 8220;We should have something like that,Pakistan needs certain criteria that India has,8221; said Cohen,a senior fellow in foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution since 1998,and the author of books on India,Pakistan and South Asia.
Body like BRO to build roads in Naxal areas
New Delhi: Roads in Naxal affected areas will be constructed by a Border Roads Organisation BRO like outfit that has been cleared by the government,Home Minister P Chidambaran has said. He said the Cabinet Committee on Security CCS has cleared the creation of the organisation. This decision was taken after the BRO,which comes under the Defence Ministry,was pulled out from Naxal areas so that it could concentrate on strategic roads on the Sino-Indian border. Sources said it would be significantly different from BRO with the involvement of private sector players.
