A drug trafficker, Sheikh Vinod, has been arrested near Hong Kong Hotel on Prince Anwar Shah Road while he was trying to strike a drug deal on Sunday night.

The police have seized 1.25 kilogram of charas from his possession.

Acting on a tip-off, plain clothed policemen of the STF and the narcotics department swooped down on him in a jointly-conducted raid.

Vinod was earlier arrested on charges of running an extortion racket and murder. He fled from the Dum Dum Central Jail in 2003, but a few months later he was arrested again.

He was, however, released in 2007 as the police could not substantiate the charges against him.

In 2008, he was arrested for possession of illegal fire arms. He was granted bail three months ago.

Vinod was booked under Section 200 B of the Narcotics Act and produced in court. He was remanded in police custody.
