MUMBAI, MAR 16: Pivotals turned subdued on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today on emergence of profit-taking with Sensex losing over 40 points. Select software scrips attracted buying support. In spite of fresh support from foreign funds, the sentiment was affected due to end-account considerations on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

The BSE sensitive index (Sensex) opened lower at 3766.16 and moved in a restricted range between 3793.58 and 3744.18, before closing at the day’s low of 3744.18 with a net loss of 39.53 points compared to the yesterday’s close of 3783.71. The BSE-100 index lost 9.23 points to 1650.40 from previous close of 1659.63.

Brokers said local institutions and mutual funds reportedly sold stocks of pharmaceutical companies which had registered sharp gains after the presentation of the budget. However, FIIs were net buyers in key scrips like Tata Tea, ITC, Larsen, Pentafour Software and Satyam Computer.

The profit-taking was also due to the approaching end of the current financialyear as operators would prefer to square up their positions by booking profits in the last settlement of the financial year. Shares of Videocon group scored impressive gains on reports that Japanese television giant Akai Electric had entered into technical and financial collaboration with it.

The total volume of business was remarkably higher at Rs 2476.80 crore compared with yesterday’s turnover of Rs 1904.11 crore. Pentafour Software was the most active with a volume of Rs 466.19 crore followed by Satyam Computer Rs 271.91 crore, ITC Rs 174.25 crore, Tata Tea Rs 157.06 crore and SBI Rs 149.89 crore.
