
The Aligarh Muslim University had to close its doors today as the students resorted to arson in the campus, in protest against the murder of a fellow student.
The students have been ordered to vacate the university8217;s hostel within 48 hours. Additional security forces have been posted at the campus. Anger had been mounting after Mazhar Naeem, a student of II Year BSc Hons was found injured on the campus on Sunday around 10 pm. He was taken to the university8217;s JLN medical college hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.
Angry students went to the Proctor8217;s office this morning, but not finding him there, they ransacked the place and set it on fire. They also torched the VC8217;s residence and the staff club, the Allahabad Bank ATM and dozens of vehicles on the premises.
In the emergency meeting that followed, the university officials decided to shut the doors of the premises. 8220;In view of the prevailing situation on the campus, university and its various maintained institutions are being closed sine die,8221; said the newly-appointed VC, Prof P K Abdul Azis. 8220;The students have been asked to vacate the hostels, bag and baggage, within 48 hours,8221; he added.
One of the largest residential universities, the AMU has around 25,000 students on its rolls.
The Executive Council meeting also sought a CBI inquiry into the murder and vandalism. A judicial inquiry into the three murders that the university had witnessed over the last one year was also sought, said university spokesperson Dr Rahat Abrar. Undercurrents of tension had been mounting on the campus of late following the alleged rape of a schoolgirl in the Abdullah women8217;s hostel last week.
Yesterday8217;s victim, Mazhar Naeem, was good in studies, said the professors. Hailing from Parikshatgarh, the youth had opted Physics for his honours and was staying in Mumtaz Hostel.
