Chavan may get elected unopposed

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is likely to get elected as an MLC

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan is likely to get elected as an MLC unopposed as the Shiv Sena has decided not to field a candidate against him in the by-election scheduled for May 4.

Announcing that his party would not contest the MLC bypoll,Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray said the prevailing situation in the state was such that the people had lost interest in such elections. He also criticised Chavan for the governments action against those protesting the Jaitapur nuclear power plant project.

A senior Shiv Sena leader said the decision of not contesting the bypoll followed the CMs appeal to the Sena leadership. Even if the Sena had decided to field a nominee,it would have been futile considering the clear majority of the Congress-NCP in the Assembly, which is the electoral college for the polls.

Chavan, who assumed office on November 11,2010,after Ashok Chavan stepped down due to his alleged involvement in the Adarsh scam,is a Rajya Sabha member. He is required to become a member of either the Legislative Assembly or the Legislative Council within six months of swearing in.
