Court refuses to stay Senate polls
The City Civil Court today refused to stay the Senate elections to the University of Mumbai. It rejected the plea of Shree Rajasthani Seva Sangh to declare the election of five representatives from the management constituency illegal. After hearing both parties, the court disposed of the notice of motion on a suit filed by the Sangh which runs a degree college in Andheri.

The poll process to the 92-member Senate body concluded this evening. Counting of votes will begin tomorrow. But Judge A V Potdar recorded the university8217;s statement that results for these five seats will be withheld for a week to enable plaintiff to file an appeal.

10-yrs RI for smuggling
Judge U D Salvi of the NDPS court today sentenced two Canadian nationals to 10 years8217; rigorous imprisonment for attempting to smuggle hashish to Hong Kong. The two were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence DRI in 1995 and fined Rs three lakh each.
