According to the late historian Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, Vande Mataram was written in the early 1870s. It subsequent inclusion in the novel Anandmath led to its popularisation, but it has also had a controversial history, with the Muslim League objecting to it by claiming it spoke of idolatory. The Congress adopted it as the national song, but after removing some stanzas from it.
