Swamy questioned on ‘inflammatory article’

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police questioned Janata Party chief Subramaniam Swamy regarding an “inflammatory article” published in an English daily

The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police on Monday questioned Janata Party chief Subramaniam Swamy regarding an “inflammatory article” published in an English daily last year. Lawyer Shehzad Poonawala had lodged a case against Swamy and the editors of the daily after the article was published.

The police said they read out the entire article in front of Swamy and asked him about the “inference” of each and every word he had written. “He told us that several paragraphs of his article were chopped and it changed the meaning of the entire article. He told us that due to space crunch the edit piece was shortened. He was defending his action,” said a senior police officer.

The questioning lasted for about two hours. Swamy, who has been granted interim protection till January 30 by the Delhi HC against his arrest, claimed that he was called as a witness in the case.

“I was asked about the meaning of certain words… I told the police which all passages were deleted,” he said. Swami claimed he wrote the article and e-mailed it to the newspaper when he was in the United States.

He alleged that the registration of case was politically motivated and it was done to ensure that he was jailed.
