Six militants killed in Jammu

JAMMU: Less than a day after the killing of four militants in Rajouri,security forces gunned down six more militants in the same area on Thursday. The militants were reportedly part of a group that crossed over from Palanwala area in Akhnoor tehsil last week. Meanwhile,Sepoy Chattar Singh who was injured in a fire fight with militants on Wednesday,succumbed to injuries.

Uttar Pradesh hikes power tariff

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Regulatory Commission on Thursday approved an average hike of 13.2 per cent in the existing power tariff for all category of the consumers in the state. A hike of around 20 per cent has been approved for urban domestic consumers. Charges for commercial and large and heavy power consumer categories have been raised by 15.12 per cent and 15.38 per cent,respectively.

Order on Raje govts graft cases stayed

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed a Rajasthan High Court order to transfer cases of alleged corruption in the previous Vasundhara Raje government from the state governments own inquiry panel to the Lokayukta. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan ordered the status quo on a petition filed by the Rajasthan government.

Chidambaram puts off Arunachal visit

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister P Chidambarams much-awaited Arunachal Pradesh visit,which was supposed to begin on Thursday,had to be postponed by a day due to inclement weather. With the incessant rain in Arunachal over the last few days,visibility in the upper reaches of the eastern Himalayas has become low even for Army choppers.

Tripura varsity Dean found dead

AGARTALA: Prof Manjari Chowdhury,Dean of Humanities department of the university and wife of Tripura Central University Vice-Chancellor Prof Arunoday Saha,was found dead at her residence in Shibnagar here,the police said. A suicide note was recovered from the house stating that she was not in a position to bear the pain of her kidney and other ailments,the police said.

Congs mass contact plan for Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The Congress has decided to launch a mass contact programme in Gujarat to turn on the heat on Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Congress president Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi are likely to address a rally in the state on the concluding day of the 15-day programme on May 1. Core Committee of the state Congress will meet on Sunday to work out details of the programme that will be launched from eight places in the state on April 14 or 15.
