SRINAGAR, JAN 17: In a change of plans, Fokker airliner hijacker Hashim Qureshi deposed before the first munsiff at the Joint Interrogation Centre, Hari Niwas, where he is presently lodged. He was to be presented in the lower court instead.

Qureshi’s family said they waited till 3 pm outside the Lower Court, Srinagar, but he did not turn up. Aslam Qureshi, brother of the former separatist leader, told The Indian Express that the judge remanded him to custody till January 23, the same day when he will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magisterate, Srinagar.

Qureshi could not be produced in the court because of “inadequate”security, Aslam quoted a deputy superintendent of police as having said. He said besides a few family members, two office bearers of the Shaheed Maqbool Trust, an orphanage, also visited Qureshi at Hari Niwas. Aslam alleged that Qureshi has been put in a single room and visitors are rarely allowed to meet him.

Qureshi has been booked under Section 363, 365, 392 and 3 of EOA (EnemyOrdinance Act). Aslam said police are preparing challans in this case. Police have already transferred his case to the Central Investigation Department.
