
LAS VEGAS, July 1: Mike Tyson, disqualified for biting champion Evander Holyfield8217;s ears in their heavyweight title bout, apologised for his action and asked fans to forgive him.
8220;Saturday night was the worst night of my professional career as a boxer and I am here today to apologise, to ask the people who expected more from Mike Tyson to forgive me for snapping in that ring and doing something that I have never done before and will never do again,8221; he said.
8220;I apologise to the world, to my family, and to the Nevada State Athletic Commission that has always treated me fairly,8221; said Tyson, reading a statement at a news conference at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino yesterday where the fight was held two days earlier.
The commission meets today to decide what punishment to hand Tyson for his actions in Saturday8217;s World Boxing Association fight.
Tyson, wearing a cream-coloured linen suit, also made a peace offering to Holyfield, saying: 8220;You are a champion and I respect that.8221;
8220;I8217;ll learn from this horrible mistake,8221; a contrite Tyson said before leaving the stage.
