The lawyer-police tiff is turning murkier by the day. A police constable was on Tuesday roughed up and beaten up by the lawyers at the Ashoka Hall of the Shivajinagar district and sessions court. The move was in retaliation to the beating of advocate Rajendra Shinde, said lawyers present in the court premises. The situation become tense as the police armed with sten guns arrived inside the court premises as the news spread.

At a meeting of the lawyers at Ashoka Hall inside the court premises to condemn the way the police treated advocate Shinde, police constable Satish Vir was found recording the proceedings of the meeting. Enraged lawyers got hold of him and beat him up. Even the journalists were not spared as the lawyers roughed up some of them.

Policemen present in the court premises informed police inspector Rahul Kumar Yevle of Shivajinagar Police Station about the situation in the court. When he reached the premises, he too was roughed up by the lawyers. Soon, the police force reached the court premises.

The situation turned ugly after the lawyers asked the police to vacate the court premises. This led to an altercation between the lawyers and the police.

Special judge P R Bora had to intervene to bring the situation under control. He spoke to Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police Satish Khandare and Assistant Commissioner of Police RS Khaire and requested the police to leave the court premises to restore sanity. The lawyers roughed up many policemen before pushing them out of the court premises, said policemen standing outside the court premises.

Angry lawyers also shouted slogans condemning the policemen. DCP Khaire, DCP Khandare and ACP Pote met judges presenting the court and discussed how the situation could be brought under control. The policemen were equally seething with rage and told reporters outside the court that they will not tolerate the lawyers8217; behaviour.
