VADODARA, July 19: Teachers' posts in several city and district schools continue to remain vacant as the District Education Officer, V Nanavati, is yet to give permission to schools to recruit people who have already been interviewed.``The interviews were conducted about a month-and-a-half ago. Interviews for teachers for important subjects like Economics and English had also been conducted, but none of these applicants have been called,'' informed an official of the Gujarat Secondary Education Board (GSEB).The official opined that if the permission to recruit 40-odd teachers was not given, the education of as many as 14,000 students in the city and district would be affected.Nanavati, however, said that as long as there was no instruction from the state government permitting recruitment, the DEO could do nothing on his part to allow it. He added that as per the government's June 15 resolution, teachers' workloads were not justified. The issue is on the agenda of the GSEB's meeting scheduled for July 31, according to the Board official. ``As long as we do not get permission to recruit teachers we will have to manage with temporary appointees'', said the principal of one city-based school. The problem in functioning with temporary teachers is that they had to be changed every year, he said.``Apart from the problem of lack of teachers the schools also face the problem of having to accept the teachers declared as surplus,'' said the principal of another school. She added that the surplus teachers, whom the schools were being asked to accept, were generally not people the school needed. She added that if the DEO did not permit recruitment, students between Std VII and Std XII would be affected. This problem would persist unless the government withdrew its resolution asking principals to accept surplus teachers, she said.
