PATIALA, AUG 17: PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh has expressed confidence that the Congress, with the help of its allies, will win all the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab. Singh was addressing his first election meeting outside the district Congress Urban office prior to the filing of nomination papers by his wife and Congress candidate from Patiala, Parneet Kaur.
Singh blamed the BJP Government for the loss of lives in the Kargil conflict. He said though it was the soldiers8217; duty to defend the country and even lay down their lives for it, the situation at Kargil could have been prevented if the intelligence agencies had been sharp enough to anticipate Pakistani motives in time. He assured the people that his party, on coming to power, would strengthen secular forces and bring all communities together to strengthen the nation.
Earlier, Parneet Kaur, while addressing the rally, said people should exercise their right to vote judiciously because their vote would ultimately decide the future of the nation. Lashing out at the BJP government, she said it had failed on all accounts as no community was happy with its rule. On the occasion, senior political leader Satpal Kapoor left the Shriomani Akali Dal to join the Congress.
Maninderjit Singh Bitta, Amarjeet Kaur, Lal Singh, Bhagwan Dass Arora and Chaudhary Jagjit Singh were also present on the occasion. The rally was attended by people from Patiala as well as the nearby villages. However, most of the dissident Congress leaders stayed away from the rally. They are reported to have held a conclave at the residence of dissident leader Rajinder Pal Atri to chalk out their strategy for the coming elections. Even former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal made it to the DC office at the time of filing of nomination papers.
