The Nithari killings found an echo in the Supreme Court on Thursday when it blamed the ghastly incident on police8217;s inaction.

The response came as counsel for states of UP and Bihar Rajeev Dhawan sought to explain that if the court8217;s order 8212; particularly on fixing the tenure of IGP, DGP and other police personnel 8212; is implemented, it won8217;t be possible for the state to take action against the cops prima facie found guilty of dereliction of duty.

At this, the court said, 8220;If checks and balances were there, Nithari would not have happened.8221; The apex Bench pointed out reasons for the mounting crime rates in India. 8220;One problem in this country has been reluctance to register FIR and cases as this would reflect adversely on the state8217;s crime rates,8221; the Bench said, not willing to accept the counsel8217;s submissions.
