IndustrialistK J Somaiya passes away

  • Noted industrialist and philanthropist Karamshi Jethabhai Somaiya passed away on Sunday, according to the family sources. He was 97. Somaiya built up an industrial empire beginning with two sugar factories in Ahmednagar district. Gradually his industrial activities widened to several new areas such as industrial alcohol, organic chemicals, bulk drugs, salt and marine chemicals and value-based publications.

    • He set up Somaiya Vidyavihar at Ghatkopar in suburban Mumbai comprising 30 educational institutions, 90,000 students and 1600 faculty members. A health complex Somaiya Ayurvihar was also started in the 80s.

  • A woman today shot dead her husband at Mumbra, Thane, allegedly after a heated quarrel with him during which he expressed doubts about her character. According to the complaint lodged by the 70-year-old mother of the victim, Yasin Palonji 27, her son had an argument with his wife Zarina 25 this morning. When heexpressed his doubts over her character, Zarina opened fire at him, killing him instantly, the complaint said. Zarina had hatched a plot with her brothers Mastan 30 and Sultan 27 and her sister-in-law Jamila 26 to kill Yasin, the complaint stated. Police have also mentioned her sister Julie 20 as an accused and so far arrested Zarina and Julie.

    • One killed in road mishap

  • One person was killed and eight injured when a Tata Sumo collided head on with a lorry in Mumbra on Saturday night. Police said theSumo was carrying passengers to Mumbra when it collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction. The dead has been identified as Mangal Warkhede 17. The injured have been admitted to government hospital.
