MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 7: A hat-trick by Nigel Mathais was the high point of Narsee Monjee’s 3-0 rout of Maharashtra in the quarter-finals of the Inter-Collegiate football tournament at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, this morning.

In the other match of the same competition, Chinai pipped St Xavier’s 2-1. Brendon Santos and Amrish Bhave netted for Chinai and Godfrey Francis reduced the margin for Xavier’s.

Ceat Tyres held

MLWB, Britacel, held Ceat Tyres 1-1 in the MDFA Chattrapati Shivaji Trophy football league at the St Xavier’s ground, Parel, today.

Charnel D’Souza gave Ceat the lead and MLWB restored parity following a self-goal.

Earlier, Naseeb beat MD College 2-1 in a Division III-C match. Ajay and Raj Thakkur netted for the winners and Kiran pulled a goal back for the losers.

Mulund, Ruparel top

Mulund College of Commerce (Group B) and Ruparel (Group A) topped their respective groups in the preliminary league matches of the Inter-Collegiate team chess tournament, organised by theMumbai University and conducted by the Bombay Chess Association, at the University Pavilion, Marine Lines, today.

At the end of the concluding seventh round, Mulund and Ruparel collected 25 and 21 points, respectively, out of a possible 28. Mulund defeated Pendharkar, while Ruparel drew with NM Commerce.

The following eight teams have qualified for the round-robin matches, scheduled to be played from September 20, along with the women’s championship: Group A: Ruparel (21); Vivekanand Engg. (20); NM Commerce (18.5) and SIES Comm. (18.5). Group B: Mulund CC (25); RK Talreja (18.5); Vasai Vartak (18.5) and Pendharkar (18).
