Don8217;t write off Federer, says Becker

Boris Becker believes fellow Bjorn Borg is wrong to write off Federer's chances of a sixth successive title in Wimbledon.

Triple Wimbledon champion Boris Becker believes fellow All England Club legend Bjorn Borg is wrong to write off Roger Federer8217;s chances of a record sixth successive title in Wimbledon.

Borg has hinted that world number two Rafael Nadal, who demolished Federer to win a fourth successive French Open trophy, is poised to dethrone the Swiss great and become the first Spanish men8217;s champion since 1966.

8220;I was surprised to hear Born Borg say Roger Federer was not his favorite to win Wimbledon this year, because in my mind it is very tough to go against a five-time champion,8221; Becker told the Daily Telegraph.

8220;It might be true that the competition is closer 8211; Rafael Nadal has clearly improved greatly on grass, while Novak Djokovic is the third player in the group 8211; but I feel that with the history Roger has at Wimbledon, you don8217;t bet against him in the same way that you don8217;t bet against Nadal on clay.8221;

Becker refuses to believe that Federer, who won just four games in his stunning Roland Garros defeat to Nadal, will be damaged by the loss.

8220;I don8217;t believe it can have affected him psychologically. He always arrives at that tournament knowing that, on clay, Nadal is a little bit better, so I don8217;t imagine mentally he is really hurt by it,8221; said the German.

8220;As we have seen, Federer went to Halle to adapt to the grass and he won convincingly 8211; not losing his serve once 8211; so how can you argue with that? If anything, I think that he is more motivated this year because he knows that if he doesn8217;t win Wimbledon, his No. 1 ranking is at stake.8221;
