Twenty-six people were killed in a terror attack on April 22 in the Baisaran meadows of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in what is being described as the deadliest strike on civilians in the Valley in the last two decades. The attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF)—a front for Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba—targeted tourists gathered in the picturesque meadow, a popular destination just outside Pahalgam town. Gunmen reportedly opened fire indiscriminately, killing 26 and injuring several others. All the victims were male.

Among the casualties was Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, 26, an Indian Navy officer from Haryana, was on his honeymoon in Kashmir with his wife Himanshi. He was shot dead in front of her while they were eating street food in Baisaran. His family had planned a birthday celebration for him on May 1. His remains are expected to reach his hometown Karnal for the last rites.
In Maharashtra, three maternal cousins—Hemant Joshi, 44; Atul Mone, 43; and Sanjay Lele, 50—were among the deceased. All three were residents of Dombivli (West) in Thane district and had travelled with their families for a holiday. Joshi, who worked in a private cargo company, had recently arranged eldercare for his father before heading to Kashmir with his wife and son. Mone was a Central Railway officer and Lele worked in the private sector. Their families are being flown back along with the bodies.
West Bengal lost two of its residents, including Intelligence Bureau officer Manish Ranjan, originally from Jhalda in Purulia district. Ranjan, who was posted in Hyderabad, was on a pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi and had planned to stop in Kashmir en route. He was travelling with his wife and was joined later by extended family. News of his death reached them as they themselves were beginning their journey.
From Karnataka, 47-year-old Shivamogga-based realtor Manjunath Rao was shot dead while buying snacks for his teenage son Abhijeya, who had just scored 98 per cent in his board exams. The family had travelled to Kashmir to celebrate the achievement. His wife Pallavi, a bank manager, said the attackers asked some of the victims to identify their religion before opening fire. Manjunath was killed instantly. His elderly mother is yet to be informed.
The bodies of the victims are being flown to their respective home states. With funerals being held across the country and investigations underway, the nation continues to reel from the terror attack.
