Mum’s the word
Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s restraint in her public statements during her recent constituency visit to Rae Bareli took everyone by surprise. This was her first interaction with the people of her constituency after the Lok Sabha elections. The vigour she had earlier shown in attacking the UP government was missing. On all the three days of her visit, people complained of step-motherly treatment by the state government, but Sonia did not criticise the state government even once. At one village, when locals spoke of the endless powercuts, the maximum Sonia said was that it was a state subject. This disappointed even Congress leaders. They hope Rahul Gandhi, who is arriving on a three-day visit of his constituency on Monday, will make up for his mother.

Change of fortune
Brij Lal,the powerful Additional Director General (Law & Order),has been cut to half after Chief Minister Mayawati appointed A K Jain as the second ADG (Law & Order),giving him charge of the western half of the state. In police circles,it is seen as a victory for Director General of Police (DGP) Vikram Singh who,it is said, had often been troubled by Lal’s extraordinary clout. For,Lal shared good relations with Principal Secretary (Home) Kunwar Fateh Bahadur and the IG (Establishment) Vijay Singh. As a result,he could get his men,not only in the IPS cadre but also in the lower cadres, posted wherever he liked. Which DGP would relish this? The DGP is now happy with Jain. Both enjoy good relations. Also,Jain is said to have direct access to the Chief Minister.

Survivor’s tales
All is not well with Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta after Mayawati’s crackdown in the case of allotment of hotel plots in Noida during the Mulayam Singh regime. She also wants action against those who sat on the matter for so long. Apparently,Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh is also in the danger zone. “This is the time to wait and watch,” remarked a senior IAS officer. But,then,Singh is a great survivor. In the meantime, the appearance of the BSP general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra in Mayawati’s company at two functions in Lucknow has also led to some speculation whether he has been rehabilitated. Mishra accompanied the CM at Janamashtami and Independence Day functions in Lucknow. Only a few weeks ago,she had told Mishra to confine himself to legal work.

Docs at work
The doctors of the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University seem to believe that they are a law unto themselves. Some time ago, they demanded that the vice-chancellor should be sacked because she has reached a certain age. Next, they held a discussion on an anonymous email which levelled all kind of allegations against the V-C and decided to wear black badges expressing solidarity with the contents of this email. Recently, they threatened to go on a strike if action was taken against any of them for doing private practice. So,here is a bunch of employees who want to sit in a judgment about their boss, who want to make money on the side even when they are full-time paid employees of the government, and who want to be the judge in their own cause. Some food for thought for Chancellor B L  Joshi?
