For this break, schools have handed out Games-related assignments to their students
The Delhi government gave all school children a rather long break in view of the Commonwealth Games, but the schools have ensured that the students stay in touch with their studies, though with a Games twist.
Here are some of the assignments that students are working on this October break make a scrap book with pictures of Shera and interesting Games-related trivia; name at least ten gold medalists; and collect statistics and facts about the participating nations. This the schools authorities feel will add to the fervour of the Games in the city.
Now,with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit asking the Organising Committee to allow free entry for students, children are doing more homework while having fun.
We have asked children to write their views on the Games, make interesting observations and put them down in the form of a project, said Rajni Arora, principal of Ramjas School,Pusa Road. Once the school re-opens,they will be asked to show their work. It will be both fun and learning.
Schools across the city have been involved in various Games related projects earlier as well. An example is the recently launched Shera Mera Dost campaign,by the Department of Tourism.
Ameeta Wattal, principal Springdales School,Pusa Road said: All through the year,we have been doing projects and work related to the CWG. From organising exhibitions, competitions,to children participating in the welcoming ceremonies of the CWG.
Our children even made a replica of the various stadia as a part of their project. Many children composed poems about the CWG. After the curtains fall on October 14,children will return to schools with their reflections on the Games. Various debates, declamation contests, even interschool competitions have been scheduled.
We have asked them to read newspapers and watch TV so that they keep a tab on the Games, said Abha Sahgal, principal Sanskriti School,Chanakyapuri.
More than 1,500 children from schools across the city participated in the opening ceremony and many will be participating in the closing ceremony as well. Children have also been participating the cultural festivals like Delhi Celebrates.
Sahgal said,Our children participated in the Youth Festival at the Central Park on October 5. At least 50 students took part in the dance and we also had our music band play there.
Binita Naha,DDE District East, said students in government schools have been asked to write about their favourite part of the Games. If the government asks our children to make assignments on the CWG,our children will be ready.
