The change in seat is significant since Harish Rawat's friend-turned-foe Ranjit Rawat had staked claims for Ramnagar and had been vocal against the party's decision to pick the former chief minister over him when the second list was announced recently.

Having won the election in 2002, the state’s first elected Chief Minister Narayan Datt Tiwari did not contest the next polls in 2007. In 2012, then CM, Maj Gen (Retd) Bhuwan Chandra Khanduri, lost as well. And in 2017, the then incumbent CM, Harish Rawat, who had contested the Haridwar Rural and the Kichha, lost both seats.

The former Chief Minister's friend-turned-foe in the party, Ranjeet Rawat, was one of the contenders for the seat. He is likely to be offered the Salt seat now although, sources said, he may consider contesting from Ramnagar as an Independent candidate.
