Report card
No Noose is Good Noose by Shekhar Gupta (IE,November 12) on the state and potential control of journalism was timely and interesting. One element that was missing from the articles considerations is the matter of quality of reporting in both the print and visual media, often making it unbearable to get through printing errors or decibel levels,as the case may be,leave alone the scope or depth of reporting. On top of that, there is enough misreporting to explain professionals shying away from making comments when approached. On TV,interviewers,in particular those the article terms senior members, talk and overwhelm interviewees so much that the nuance of an interview is often lost. While we should be proud of how lively our media is in contrast to the Wests,it appears that it is reflective of Indias youth and accompanying energy in all activity. My own feeling is that if its quality improves, respect for the media would rise pari passu.

Air pockets
With reference to the editorial No bailout (IE,November 15),when the entire aviation industry is in the doldrums,a government bailout for Kingfisher should not even be considered. Vijay Mallyas sinking business venture should be given the options that any other private player would be presented with: improve profitability by stringent measures or close down. Or,he can always infuse funds from his other ventures. But the government should not spend taxpayers money on bailing it out.

Aviation industry is infamous for making millionaires out of billionaires. Still, the fact that a carrier like Kingfisher has fallen on bad days in such a short time shows that all is not well with Indias airline industry. It needs to be entirely restructured. Policymakers should take a fresh look at levies, fees, duties and taxation, which should not end up smothering the sector. Also, since it is a capital-intensive industry,it should be allowed to access capital through FDI.

UP & down
Rahul Gandhi has started his campaign in Uttar Pradesh (Angry Rahul launches UP campaign calling Maya govt insensitive, corrupt,IE,November 15). In a blistering attack on the Mayawati government,he has said the people of the state are forced to work as ill-paid labourers in Punjab or beg on the streets of Maharashtra. Gandhi seems to have forgotten that the economic scenario in the state was not very different when his own party was in power.

Forgotten?
When the scientist Har Gobind Khorana,a US citizen of Indian origin, won the Nobel in 1968,Indians rushed to bask in the reflected glory. It is a pity that his death was hardly noticed by the Indian media or the ready-to-mourn leaders.
