The Left Front is likely to nominate CPM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury for a second term in the Rajya Sabha. The process to select candidates for six Rajya Sabha seats started Tuesday the first day for filing nominations. While the elections are to be held on July 22,the last date for filing nominations in July 12.
The elections are being held as the term of five members Swapan Sadhan Bose TMC,Sitaram Yechury CPM,Brinda Karat CPM,Md Amin CPM and Abani Roy RSP has ended. Another seat has fallen vacant due to the death of sitting member Arjun Sengupta Independent last year.
Yechury is expected to file his nomination on July 7. A Left Front meeting will be held on July 7,after which the Left candidate will file his nomination, said Surya Kanta Mishra,Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
The Left will only be able to send one member as it has only 61 MLAs at least 42 votes are needed for each seat. Party sources said the main reason for choosing Yechury is that he is a member of several parliamentary committees,including the joint parliamentary committee on 2G spectrum scam.
Meanwhile,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has decided on three Trinamool Congress candidates for the Rajya Sabha former Land Reforms Commissioner Debabrata Bandopadhyay,quiz master Derek OBrien and outgoing MP Swapan Sadhan Boses son Srinjoy Bose. She is yet to decide on the fourth candidate.
The Congress,which can send one member,is yet to decide on its candidate. Four names are doing the rounds WBPCC working president Pradip Bhattacharya,WBPCC spokesman Om Prakash Mishra,Pradyot Guha,personal assistant to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee,and senior Congress leader Maya Ghosh.
