Mumbai Mayor BMC Election Results 2026 Live Updates: Mumbai to get a woman Mayor

Mumbai will have a woman mayor for the second consecutive term after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was placed in the Open (Women) category in the lottery draw for mayoral reservations held on Thursday.

The draw, conducted for 29 municipal corporations that went to polls last week, triggered objections from the opposition Shiv Sena (UBT), which questioned the exclusion of Mumbai from the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation list. The Congress also raised concerns over the reservation draw for Parbhani.

Of the 29 municipal corporations, 16 mayoral posts have been reserved one for Scheduled Tribes (ST), three for Scheduled Castes (SC), including two for women, and eight for OBCs, four of them for women. The remaining 17 corporations fall under the Open category, nine of which are reserved for women.

Shiv Sena-UBT has raised objections over the draw on Mumbai reservation.

Thackeray led party had questioned as to why Mumbai was omitted from OBC reservation draw.

The Congress has raised objections on Parbhani draw. MoS (Urban Development Department) Madhuri Misal said that the objection has been recorded and response will be given after the completion of the process.

Former mayor Kishori Pednekar alleged that in 2017 and 2019 the Mumbai mayor post was reserved for open.

"As per the rotational system, the post should have been included in the OBC draw list. The government has insulted OBCs by purposely denying them the opportunity," said Pednekar. She said that the government purposely added a new rule to stop Scheduled Tribe candidate from becoming a mayor. "The new rule said that corporation needs at least 3 ST corporators to be included into the lottery for ST reservation. When was it introduced? It was done to benefit ruling side," she added.

The lottery for reservation on mayoral post for the 29 Municipal Corporations in Maharashtra has begun. As of now results of 4 draws are announced, as follows:

Kalyan - Dombivli - ST

Thane - SC

Jalna - SC (Woman)

Latur - SC (Woman)

All attention on the impending lottery that will decide the reservation for the city’s top civic post, the Mayor.

The draw will be conducted on Thursday at 11 am by the Urban Development Department at Mantralaya, will use the rotation method and is expected to set the terms of the mayoral contest among the three main players the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Eknath Shinde led Shiv Sena, and the Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena UBT.

After nearly four years under administrator rule, elected corporators are set to return to Mumbai’s planning table on January 31, taking charge of key development projects from flood management to large-scale water augmentation and desalination initiatives.

With the new body set to be sworn in next week, these ongoing big ticket infrastructure projects are likely to remain the top priorities in the new house.

Concretisation project

Nearly 40 percent complete so far, the concretisation project which seeks to make Mumbai ranks high on the alliance’s manifesto floated ahead of the civic polls. It was in 2022 that the former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a mega concretisation plan with the aim to make Mumbai pothole free. Over the next two years, the BMC rolled out awarded tenders worth Rs. 17,000 crore project to concretise 700-km of roads (or 2,121 roads) across the city, with 320 km (700 roads) pegged to be concretised in phase I and 378 km(1421 roads) proposed to be paved in concrete in phase II. Mumbai has a road network of 2,050 km, of which 1,333 km roads are already concretised.
