The Samajwadi Party has stated that it will support the Congress after the elections, provided it agreed to dismiss the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh. Party leaders also stated that, unlike in the past, they would not be averse to taking up ministerial berths in the government.

The people of the state, especially the youth, farmers and traders are disappointed with the present government in UP. Taking into consideration their welfare, the party will support whoever dismisses the unconstitutional BSP Government in the state, Mulayam said in Mainpuri after casting his vote.

Giving a reason for backing the Congress,SP general secretary Amar Singh said in Ghaziabad,we cannot go with the Third Front as it has Mayawati. We may be forced to look at the Congress. However,he clarified that the SPs relationship with the Congress would be a practical one and not emotional.

The SP would back the Congress in the formation of the government provided there is a respectable understanding between the two, said party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav. The party has decided to hold its parliamentary board and MPs meeting after the elections to discuss the issue.

The SP leaders demand for the dismissal of state government attracted criticism from the Bahujan Samaj Party whose state president Swami Prasad Muarya said that Mulayam Singhs statement showed his frustration and petty mentality.

The government came into existence after getting a full public mandate and talking of dismissing such a government is an insult to the 20 crore people of the state. It shows Mulayams mental bankruptcy and for this,he should tender an apology, said Maurya. He added that Mulayams statement is not only anti-Dalit but also anti-democracy.
