Former telecom minister A Raja,an accused in the 2G spectrum scam, has requested Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to direct the Joint Parliamentary Committee, examining the allocation and pricing of spectrum from 1998 to 2009,to summon him as a witness. Raja has sent a copy of his request, made on Friday,to JPC chairman P C Chacko.
I am willing and indeed anxious to appear before the JPC,which may kindly be directed to summon me as soon as possible, Raja said. His evidence,he said, will definitely bring the nation closer to uncovering the truth hidden under lies propagated through media.
The request comes days after Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati told the JPC that the controversial press note was changed by Raja after it had been cleared by him.
Two DMK members of the JPC,T R Baalu and Tirchi Siva, have been pressing Chacko to call Raja since.
Raja said it appeared from media reports that the deposition of Vahanvati and senior officers of the Department of Telecom and other ministries was an exercise in blame-shifting. Since it was vital that the JPC was not misguided by false and incomplete evidence,it was obvious that I would be best placed to explain the policy and rationale of the government behind issuing of licences and grant of spectrum as well as the sequence of events and roles of various individuals and institutions.
Sources said the Speaker could not direct any House committee to call a person. At best, she can forward Rajas letter to Chacko.
