Less than a week ahead of the Assamese observing Rongali Bihu, the state8217;s New Year, the United Liberation Front of Asom ULFA has asked the people to observe the festival in a 8216;modest8217; way.

ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, who made this appeal on the outfit8217;s 28th foundation day yesterday, said the people should observe Bihu in a 8216;modest8217; way because six ULFA leaders8217; wives continue to fast-unto-death seeking information from the government about their husbands who have remained untraced since the December 2003 Bhutan operations.

The wives have been on an indefinite hunger strike since March 21 after the government refused to disclose information regarding their husbands despite intervention by the Gauhati High Court. Since then the six women have been arrested and admitted to the GMC Hospital.

The ULFA is also slowly building up a campaign over the arrest of the six women, by roping in the People8217;s Committee for Peace Initiative in Assam PCPIA, an umbrella organisation of several groups including the Asom Jatiyabadi Yuva-Chatra Parishad AJYCP. Members of this group held a hunger strike across the state on Friday and Saturday demanding release of the six women and information on their husbands.
