A long shot of the heritage building of the 125-year-old Mahatma Phule Mandai, the cacophony of the Shivaji Market of Camp or the grandeur of the Shaniwarwada in the evening lights. These cultural city hotspots offer photo enthusiasts a widespread photographic opportunity. With a similar idea in place, the Wikipedia Club Pune (WCP) has organised a photo walk on October 7 covering the lesser known heritage structures. The walk aims to put Pune on the global map as far as its history and heritage are concerned. The organisers say that pictures will be put up on their Wikipedia page.

“The most outstanding aspect of Pune and its people is the sound balance between modernity and an age-old rich culture and tradition,” says Abhishek Suryawanshi,Founder,WCP,adding,“Various cultures have blended perfectly here –– be it the cosmopolitan people of Camp or the traditional Maharashtrians in the Peths. They have prospered here and kept their identity alive while blending with the rest. According to the Archaeological Survey of India,Pune is the only Indian city to have 30 monuments, the highest number of heritage spots, concentrated in an area i.e. the old city. This makes for a fantastic photo opportunity for enthusiasts. Besides a city with five or six historical monuments is considered a hot-spot for tourists. We wish to highlight these places as tourist spots on the global scale.”

Suryawanshi mentions that the inspiration is ‘Wikipedia takes my City’,a day-long scavenger hunt and free-content photography contest . It has been conducted regularly since 2008 in cities like Philadelphia,Boston,Kolkata,Montreal,New York amongst others. “One does not need to have special skills in photography or an expensive professional camera to participate in the photo-walk,even a point and shoot camera serves the purpose,” he says, adding that the event is free of cost and open to all.

The categories are based on different themes, which include religion, lifestyle and other city locations . The route covers places like the Mahatma Phule Mandai,Shivaji Market, the public transport system of the city and roads and suburbs like J.M.Road,Camp. “The participants will assemble at Azam Campus. After a briefing session about the different monuments in Pune, they will be divided into 20 groups based on 10 categories,” says Suryawanshi.

(The WC Photo Walk will be held on October 7. It will begin at 9 am at the Azam Campus in Camp)
