Chris Van Der Werken,former president of AO International,formed by a group of Swiss surgeons in 1958 to specialise in trauma and musculoskeletal surgery,was in Pune on Friday to inaugurate Sancheti hospitals AO training centre and knowledge laboratory.
AO (Association for Study of International Fixation) specialises in general trauma,spine,craniomaxillofacial and veterinary surgery,Werken told media persons. There are AO regions including Asia Pacific,Latin America,North America,Europe and Africa with specialised support from the AO HQ at Switzerland. For the first time in India,Sancheti Institute for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation,along with four others,have been designated as AO training centres.
AO has trained more than three lakh surgeons all over the world in the field of fracture surgery and at Sancheti hospital,courses now will be conducted to train doctors. There has been an increase in high velocity accidents especially at the expressway,Dr K H Sancheti,Founder Chairman of the hospital told media persons. We get at least 2,500 cases of trauma every year,Dr Chetan Pradhan,head of the Trauma Care Centre at Sancheti Hospital,said. He said that the training provided at the AO centre will be beneficial for the orthopaedics.
The AO centre and knowledge laboratory has hi-tech equipment and a surgical skills laboratory that will help local surgeons interact with their counterparts in any part of the world. The laboratory will also have bone models to provide hands on experience for orthopaedic surgeons. According to Werken,India has scored over China in getting more number of AO designated centres due to the genetic capability of Indians to deal with orthopaedic cases with detail and precision and also their command over the English language.
