Sending greeting cards before Durga Puja to party colleagues, industrialists, bureaucrats and media persons seems to be the yearly ritual for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Last week, she showcased a sketch to the press at the state secretariat. As the media appreciated it,she asked them whether their puja shopping was complete.
Setting a precedent
Last week,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee presided over a meeting of the State Planning Board. She thus became the first Chief Minister in 41 years to preside over the meeting. The last time a meeting of the Planning Board was presided over by a Chief Minister was in 1972 by the then Chief Minister Siddhartha Shankar Ray. The two chief ministers who came after Ray Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee never cared to chair the meeting.
Sparring ministers
Commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee and minister for finance Amit Mitra are believed to be at loggerheads at the meeting of the group of ministers at Camac Street. The verbal duel soon turned into personal attacks. Incidentally, speculations were rife about a cabinet re-shuffle and Mitra was reported to be getting the portfolio of commerce and industries.
